National Junior Chess Champion, Haruna Nsubuga beat Rajab Kamoga in the fourth round of the Olympiad Qualifiers (Second phase) to lead by a full point with 4 points out of 4 games played at Pope Paul Memorial Hotel in Rubaga. Four more games are to be played in the qualifiers to continue on 8th and 10th March 2012 at the same venue. In other fourth round games, Olympian Shadrack Kantinti recovered from an early upset to beat Farouk Fauza and get to 3 points, Vianney Luggya beat Micheal Mawanda, Harold Wanyama beat fellow Olympian Kenneth Kakooza, Stephen Kisuze beat Joe Kaamu as Mathias Ssonko beat Frobisha Katula. After the second phase the top 8 players will be picked to join FIDE Masters Elijah Emojong and Moses Kawuma and Candidate Masters Bob Bibasa and Patrick Kawuma in the last phase to feature a round robin of the top 12 from which four will be picked to join National Champ, Arthur Ssegwanyi on Uganda's team. EMOJONG TO PLAY IN MUMBAI OPEN

FM EMOJONG READY FOR ACTION IN MUMBAI OPEN

Uganda’s recently crowned FIDE Master (FM) Elijah Emojong is in India to slug it out with 17 Grandmasters and 30 International Masters among others in the 4th Mumbai Mayor’s International Chess Tournament that runs from Friday 16th September to 24th September 2011 in Mumbai, India.
The tournament has attracted entries from 10 countries including Bangladesh, Nepal, Ukraine, Armenia, Russia, Uzbekistan, Poland, Israel, India and Uganda.

Russian GM Maxim Turov, with a rating of 2643, is the top seed in the tournament which is organized by Venus Chess Academy and Bombay Chess Association, sponsored by Mumbai Municipal Corporation and co-sponsored by LIC of India.
The rated tournament provides Emojong with a rating of 2156, a rare chance to improve on his rating points and acquisition of an IM norm if he does well against the top rated players in the event.
A total of 11 rounds are to be played in the
event. At the time of filing this report, Emojong was preparing for first round action in the next 15 minutes.

British Grandmaster and fomer world champion contender Nigel Short lost one game in his 25 game simul in Kampala on Thursday. Short played 25 games of which he won 20, drew 4 and lost 1 to Grace Kigeni in a Siccilian Najdorf.

Short is visiting Uganda as part of the Karpov campaign to head the world chess governing body FIDE.

THE race for the world chess governing body, FIDE Presidency has presented Ugandans with a lifetime opportunity to play against renowned British Grandmaster Nigel Short in Kampala. Nigel, who arrives today, will play exhibition games with several local players as he seeks Uganda’s vote for GM Anatoly Karpov in the election that will be held at the World Olympiad in Russia. Karpov face the incumbent president Kirsan Illumzyinhov.

A press release issued by Uganda Chess Federation (UCF) publicity Vianney Luggya said that the exhibition games are scheduled for tomorrow and Nigel will depart on Friday. Nigel, who challenged former World Champion Garry Kasparov for the world title in 1993, is regarded as the strongest British player of the 20th Century. He will be the first Grandmaster to visit Uganda and play chess with locals in the history of the game in the country. Nigel is a world acclaimed chess columnist, coach and commentator.

He has an International FIDE rating of 2685 and is ranked number 38 in the world. “His visit to Uganda is also meant to rally support for his preferred candidate GM Anatoly Karpov who is standing against Kirsan,” Luggya said. The venue for the exhibition games and the players that will be lined up against Nigel were yet to be named.

Harold Wanyama edged Bob Bibasa in the final game of the last round to win the 4th edition of the East Africa Chess Championship on Monday evening at Lugogo indoor stadium.

Wanyama tied on points with tournament surprise package and junior champion Patrick Kawuma at 6.5 out of the 8 rounds but edged the latter on a Bucholz tie break.

On his way to victory, Wanyama downed Stephen Bwire, I Bob Bibasa

van Meri, Fred Okiring, Atwooli Akello, Rajab Kamoga and Bob Bibasa. He drew with Kenya‘s Nathan Ateka and lost only once to Patrick Kawuma in a second round game that was billed as the biggest upset of the tournament.

Second-placed Kawuma beat Mohamed Omwony, Wanyama, Kenneth Ouma, Walter Okas, Simon Gonza and drew with Kenya‘s Ben Magana. He only lost to Isaac Munanira.

In the ladies category, Kenya’s Janet Rosana emerged winner in a 12 round robin competition. The Kenyan won 9 games and lost two.

WIZARD Stephen Kawuma has achieved the status of FIDE Master(FM) following a splendid display against very highly rated titled players at the Africa Individual Chess Championship that just ended in Windhoek, Namibia over the weekend.

A FIDE Master is a prestigious title that precedes the International Master (IM) and later the Grand Master (GM).

Kawuma beat Mozambique's Chambule Pedro Lucas in the 7th round before losing to Zambia's Chumfwe Stanley in the 8th round.

The Ugandan recovered to beat FM Alice Mateus Felizardo Viageirof in the 9th and final round to finish with 4.5 points out of 9.

A 50% performance in such a highly rated tournament featuring the continent's top players grants a player the right to become a FIDE Master (FM).
